Look of the Day - Spring Color Splash

14 May 2012

Today's Chic And Curvy look of the day, features a colorful look I wore this weekend. I purchased my Bisou Bisou Mixed Shell Print Smocked Peasant top from JcPenney.com and the Lagoon Blue Straight Leg Jeans by Denim 24/7 from Roamans.

While surfing JcPenney.com, I spotted this top and fell in love with all of the beautiful colors. I ordered an extra large because I knew that I wanted to wear it off the shoulder plus I wanted extra room in the tummy area. JcPenney has tons of chic spring and summer tops with great low prices, so check them out. The Lagoon Blue Straight Leg Jeans by Denim 24/7 from Roamans are great too. They are comfortable and I plan to style them with so many fabulous looks this summer.

I paired this colorful Spring look with a turquoise earrings, necklace, cocktail ring, and black heels.

Here is the look:

This week's Fashion Friday is featuring business woman Jade Greer, owner of the fabulous K Staton Boutique in Baltimore, Maryland. In this interview, we are discussing K Staton Boutique, fashion trends, plus Jade was so kind to share with us her journey in becoming a business owner. Take a look at our insightful interview with Jade Greer of K Staton Boutique!

What inspired you want to start a boutique?

Well, to be honest it kind of fought me! Growing up as a "kurvy" girl I always loved fashion and looking well but I thought I wanted to work at a major company as a CEO so I could wear a fly suit!!! Little did I know that it would be my own company! The idea to open a plus-size boutique happened in my home, after a routine trip to the market! I was standing in the checkout line and Baltimore Magazine got my attention!!! It was their annual SHOP Baltimore issue for Dec (I still have the magazine) but they highlighted all these wonderful boutiques throughout the city. I instantly noticed that none of them cater to me a women who loves fashion at a size 18/20. So that is how it all started!

How did you come up with the name “K Staton Boutique”?

First, let me tell you, you should have heard some of the names that I was coming up with. I had a notebook full of names! It was curvy this, thick that!!!! It was so funny. It was my husband who actually said what about K Staton Boutique? I thought to myself that is perfect! The K comes from my mother’s first name Kimberly and Staton is her last name! She passed away in 2003 of breast cancer; she was my best friend, biggest supporter and encourager. That was exactly what I wanted to be for women who are made to feel second and not beautiful. I also think that it’s universal and appealing to all women.

How long has the boutique been open?

We opened our doors August 24, 2009almost three years! Wow, time flies when you’re building a career and doing what you love!

How long did it take for you to open your boutique?

I was first given the desire to open the boutique in Dec 2007, so between then and actually opening was about 18 months. In that time I studied and researched the plus sized industry, wrote my business plan, and took lots of business classes!

Describe the style aesthetic for the boutique.

The style aesthetic of the boutique is open, fresh, glamorous, and chic! I am a person who dislikes clutter. I like things to be clean and open. I wanted it to feel feminine. I do like color so I try and play with that in the displays and clothing!

What sets your boutique apart from the others in your area?

Firsthand foremost we Start where most other boutiques Stop. Also, we don’t just carry a little bit of plus sizes, but that is who we are. We ONLY carry sizes 12+. We say here at K Staton Boutique that we are Style & Size! Another great thing that separates K Staton Boutique from the larger chains that carry sizes 12+ or other boutique is our service and genuine love for our “girls”! We want each person that walks through our doors to feel welcomed and at home but leave empowered and confident in whom they all (size 22 & all!) To quote a customer she said “K Staton Boutique is like coming over to your best friends well designed huge closet and getting to try on all her clothing!” Lastly what sets us apart is our style & fit education that we offer everyone that come to see if. We will let you know what works for you.

What is the biggest challenge with owning a plus size store?

Well, I would say that my biggest challenge of having the boutique is wanting to be everything for everybody that walks through my doors. If I don’t have what someone might be looking for that day, I try my best to find and direct them to that look. I use to think that it would be hard finding the type and quality of clothing that I wanted for the boutique but I am finding some great designers. That is exciting! I want everyone to walk out of the boutique happy, satisfied, with bag in hand. Sometimes that’s not always the case. But they do come back!

If you could give advice to women who are thinking about starting a boutique what would it be?

A lot of people ask me this question and women ask me all the time how did I get started. I always try to go back to before K Staton was open and what I wanted to hear from others. So, all I can say is GO FOR IT! Do your part as far as having a business plan, numbers all together, and know your industry and you have got to believe in you and what you want to do. Speak with passion and heart and others will see that in you and have no choice but to open up doors! By all means have FAITH!!!

You have a wonderful eye for fashion, how would you describe your personal style?

Thank you; my personal style would be casual/chic with a touch of trend. I like clean lines, classic silhouette and tailored looks.

Tell us about what services you offer at K Staton Boutique?

At K Staton Boutique we offer clothing and accessories for women sized 12+ in some styles we can go up to 30/32. We also offer personal shopping and styling for women who just don’t have the time or know how to shop. On the other hand, we have ladies who want to learn how to shop for their body types, so we offer workshops on how to dress for you shape and size! A new addition to the boutique is an intimate bra/panty line Elomi. So we also can fit and measure our “girls” for their bras as well!

Who is your typical customer (meaning what type of woman would be interested in your clothing / who's your target market)?

The K Staton woman is between 25 and 55years old. She is sophisticated with a little trend but she does not want to compromise style for size in her clothing. She is tired of going to the same 3places to shop. She also knows that in most cases it is quality over quantity.

What do you look for in clothing companies when buying?

I look for quality, style, and fit! I think that if I continue to bring those three elements to K Staton women will continue to keep coming back!

What brands are sold at K Staton Boutique?

I have some brands that “Kurves” women alike will know like Monif C. Kiyonna, IGIGI, SPANX, Not Your Daughters Tummy Control jeans, but I also wanted to bring new names like Elomi, Lysse Leggings, Karen Kane, & Svoboda &many more. I am always looking and searching for new lines that fit and flatter women with “kurves”

What’s new at K Staton Boutique?

Really what's new is our location! We have been in our larger location for just 7 months now!!! We are happy glad to be able to offer a more comfortable space for our “girls” to shop! Our original space was just around 450sq feet now we are about three times that! God is awesome! With the new location which is just two blocks north of the old one we can offer more inventory, classes, and events! Other than the new location new inventory is coming in for Spring/Summer 2012 weekly! It’s about comfort and style this summer at K Staton Boutique.

What are your favorite trends for Spring?

For spring my favorite trend is floral prints, colorblocking, and wedges!!! I love a great pretty feminine floral print be it a dress or a top it just make me smile! Color blocking is very trendy and I love how you can mix and match colors. Orange & red is a chic combo that we’re seeing a lot of. Wedges to me are a “Kurvy” girl’s best friend. I have so many girls that don’t like heels or feel uncomfortable in them. The trick is a wedge because it gives support to the whole foot and it’s not just one tiny heel taken all the weight. Plus they are very comfortable!

What are your best sellers?

My best sellers are my NYDJ trouser denim, Kiyonna Trina Top, Highwaisted SPANX, & all dresses!!!

Where should our readers go to checkout your boutique?

We are on line at http://kstaton.com, Facebook: KStaton Boutique, Twitter: kstatonboutique

Do you have an online store, if not do you plan on selling online?

We are currently working on our online store! We are very excited to offer our clothes to our customers not just in the MD, DC, and VA area.

Some are my readers are models and aspiring models, where do you find your models?

The models that I have used in the pass were all customers of mine. I have had women email me letting me know that they were interested in modeling, so I always keep their info.

What can we expect from you over the next year?

Over the next year K Staton Boutique will continue to bring women sizes 12+ the best in trendy sophisticated clothing and accessories. We will have our second FIT 101 workshop in May than again in October. We have them quarterly three times a year. We will also continue to connect with other likeminded business to bring amazing events and products to our customers. Lastly the online shopping will be available sometime in May!

What are your plans for the future?

I have so many dreams and desires that God has given me. The future is so bright and big for K Staton Boutique! I want to really reach more women and teach them how to love themselves no matter their size. I do believe that all women can be fashionable and stylish at any size. But it first starts with confidence and that comes from loving who you are. So one of my goals is to grow the FIT 101 workshops to the MD, DC, and VA area. In addition to that, I want to be a one stop shop for women. So the sky is the limit and I am reaching for it!
